History Of The Heart Transplant.

The first Heart Transplant was carried out in South Africa in 1967 by South African surgeon Christian Barnard,   he performed the ground breaking operation on 53 year old Lewis Washkansky.

The operation was a success though the medication given to Mr Washkansky, which was given to stop his body from attacking the transplanted organ also effected his bodies abuilty to fight off other infections and as a result Mr Washkansky died eighteen days after the operation with double pneumonia.
