THE HEART MATE

How does Heart Mate Work?

More than 30 years in development, the Heart Mate is a blood pump that, when implanted alongside the natural heart, takes over part of the heart's pumping function. The Heart Mate is designed to assist the left ventricle, (the main chamber that performs 80% of the heart's work), which is responsible for pumping oxygen-rich blood from the lungs throughout the body. The Heart Mate inplantable blood pump is placed just below the diaphragm (breathing muscle) in the abdomen. It is attached between the natural heart and the aorta (the main artery that feeds blood to the entire body), leaving the natural circulation in place while providing all of the energy necessary to propel blood throughout the body.
